　　大家叫他小名“石头”，为人开朗、乐观、有正义感，做事卖力、勤快，17岁过番到南洋投靠大伯，在锡矿场当矿工，省吃俭用，3年后回乡娶了青梅竹马的鸭子，把她也带去南洋，憧憬存点本钱做小生意，衣锦还乡，不料好事多磨，先是被迫帮大伯扛赌债，后更因得罪“卡巴拉”黑龙而受尽折磨。在黑龙刻意的荼毒之下，染上鸦片瘾，难以自拔，性情大变，令他和鸭子的感情备受考验。他在南来的船上帮了天鹏和天鹰兄弟，并与天鹏结拜为兄弟，二人互敬互重，他也在天鹏的帮助下重拾信心。

　　Nicknamed “Little Stone”, Hong Shi is a cheerful and optimistic chap who works hard for a living. Leaving his hometown at the age of 17, Hong Shi got a job at the tin mine through the help of his uncle and led a thrifty life, so as to marry and to bring his childhood sweetheart Lin Yazi (Jeannette Aw) to Nanyang.

　　The couple had planned to set up a small business, only to have their dreams dashed by Hong Shi’s uncle’s gambling debts and Heilong’s (Pierre Ng) cunning tricks. Their love was put to test when Hong Shi got addicted to opium – which badly affected his temperament – under Heilong’s nasty influence.

　　Hong Shi became sworn brothers with Zhang Tianpeng (Li Nan Xing) after he saved the latter’s brother Zhang Tianying (Adi-Allen) on the ship to Nanyang. With the help of Tianpeng, Hong Shi regained his confidence.

　　老药剂师，性格孤僻、古怪，整天把自己关在实验室内，专注研发新药物。旁人无法跟他沟通，唯有蕙娘，能“对付”这怪老头。天鹰的勤恳和善良终取得他的信任，把研发出来的新药方交给天鹰，嘱他生产新药以益苍生。

　　Chen Kuan is an eccentric and highly experienced pharmacist who spends most of his time in the laboratory researching on a new drug and speaks to no one other than Huiniang. He later successfully developed a new drug and gave it to his trusted and diligent disciple, Tianying.

　　方展发饰演：黑龙

　　锡矿场的“卡巴拉”（督工），为人深沉、毒辣，为达目的不择手段，但他会变成这样不是没原因的。他先辈是被卖来南洋开荒的“猪仔”，不只客死异乡，连块葬身之地都没有。他也跟先辈一样，飘洋过海，从唐山到南洋来找活路，但他不要像父亲一样的下场，他不要当一辈子矿工，到老也回不了乡。他要当矿主，赚多多的钱，为了达到这目标，他不惜一切，所有阻碍他的人，他都不计一切代价铲除。他与张广达勾结，种植鸦片，开采锡矿，眼看目标愈来愈近，但天鹏却出现坏他好事。他对天鹏赶尽杀绝，对天鹏的拜把兄弟石头也不留情，唯独他对鸭子下不了毒手。鸭子的善良和坚韧让黑龙也有心软的时刻。他为得到鸭子，威逼利诱，使尽一切手段，但鸭子却不为之所动。从黑龙的身上，我们看见另一类过番客的悲剧。

　　After witnessing his father’s tough and impoverished plight as a tin miner, Heilong vows to carve a better life in future. As a result, he resorted to unscrupulous methods and climbed his way up to become a tin factory’s supervisor (also known as “Kabala”). His ambitious dream to earn a fortune led him colluding with Zhang Guangda to cultivate opium.
