　　在南洋出生的华裔，母早丧，父亲管教虽严，但天生顽劣，行事莽撞，不时闯祸。天性善良，好打抱不平，对伪善者深恶痛绝。父娶“娘惹”珍娘，珍娘携养女蕙娘进张家，蕙娘成为他名义上的“妹妹”，蕙娘聪慧尤在他之上，东恩与她“交手”往往吃败仗。开始非常排斥珍娘母女，但珍娘恩威并用，让东恩心服口服，完全接纳珍娘。珍娘发觉东恩天性聪明，是个可塑之材，无奈东恩对做生意毫无兴趣，屡教不听，父死后，东恩在珍娘用心栽培之下，终成大器。他与蕙娘从互相看不顺眼到相看两不厌，彼此扶持照顾，共同面对许多难题，已超越兄妹之情，却因名义上是“兄妹”关系而不敢逾越。

　　Born and bred in Nanyang, Zhang Dong-en grew up under the strict teachings of his father after his mother died young. Even though his wilful and reckless behaviour often got him into trouble, Dong-en is innately a kind-hearted and righteous man who has no tolerance for the evil.

　　Despite his unwillingness to accept his step-mother Huang Zhenniang (Carole Lin) at first, Dong-en was eventually moved by her sincerity.

　　He may not have any interest in managing the family business, but Zhenniang saw the sharp-wittedness in him and moulded him into a capable man after his father passed.

　　From quarrelling all the time to becoming each other’s pillar of support, Dong-en and his step-sister Zhang Huiniang (Joanne Peh) developed feelings beyond that of “siblings”. Although they are not blood-related, the pair did not have the courage to pursue their hearts’ desires.

　　大方豪气，行事果断，坚持原则，只要认为是对的决定，就不轻易退缩。她也是个“离经叛道”的娘惹，从小就受中西教育，有传统一面，也有自由开放的思想。她不受传统礼教约束，不理闲言闲语，“抛头露面”担任华商与英商的中介，从中学习不少经营之道，人脉颇广，在27岁“高龄”下嫁东恩之父张广平。婚后夫妻相敬如宾，她除了帮张广平打理生意，也把张家上下照顾得无微不至。她侍奉张母至孝，牵制跋扈嚣张的“弟妹”秀香，对下人也以礼相待，当然，她“收服”顽劣的东恩更是张家之福，否则，张家的事业恐无以为继。张家上下无不对她敬重有加，除了张广达夫妇之外，张广达因珍娘“处处作梗”对她怀恨在心。张广平死，珍娘撑起家业，并铺排东恩接班，与欲夺权的张广达关系恶化，后被对方毒害而死在回家的船上，张家上下无不为她的死悲恸。

　　Generous and determined, Huang Zhenniang is a decisive woman who lives by her principles. Unlike most Nonyas, she was taught both Eastern and Western ideals which resulted in her dynamic character – both traditional and open-minded.

　　Zhenniang did not felt restricted by societal norms and worked as a middleperson for Chinese and Western businessmen. Through her job, she picked up business tips and gained a wide network of contacts.

　　Zhenniang married Zhang Guangping (Desmond Sim) at the age of 27 and assisted her husband in managing his business while taking care of his entire family. She regarded Guangping’s mother Old Madam Zhang (Zhu Xiu Feng) like her own, subdued her domineering sister-in-law Han Xiuxiang (Priscelia Chan) and moulded her step-son Zhang Dong-en (Elvin Ng) into a competent man, who would later succeed the family business.

　　Zhenniang was well-respected by everyone in the Zhang family except Zhang Guangda (Terence Cao) and his wife. Her death, which was caused by Guangda, was mourned by the entire household.
