　　甜美，勤快的客家姑娘，唱得一口好山歌。外表柔弱，却有客家姑娘刻苦耐劳、坚韧不拔的精神。与洪石青梅竹马，三年前送他到南洋，一心就盼着他回来娶她，不料父亲却安排她嫁给一个屠户，她抵死不从。终等到洪石归来，婚后随洪石从唐山过南洋，到陌生的矿区，当起“琉琅女”，每天早出晚归，顶着烈日曝晒淘洗锡米，却从不叹一声苦。石头跌落山崖，下落不明时她正有孕在身，为了给石头延续香火，她咬紧牙关活下去，拒绝黑龙别有目的的帮助，挺着肚子继续当“琉琅女”，并在河边分娩，诞下一子。

　　A sweet-looking and hard-working lady, Lin Yazi sings to the tunes of a folk song brilliantly.  Although she appears to be weak, she possesses the dauntless spirit of the Hakka people.

　　Lin Yazi and Hong Shi (Desmond Tan) are childhood sweethearts who promised to marry each other when they grow up. Three years ago, Yazi bade farewell to Hong Shi who set sail for Nanyang and defied her father’s request for her to wed a butcher.

　　After tying the knot in their hometown, Yazi and Hong Shi headed for Nanyang where they led their new married life. Despite the long hours and tough conditions of working in the fields, Yazi never uttered a word of complaint.

　　An unfortunate accident saw Hong Shi falling off a cliff just when Yazi was pregnant with their child. To carry on the family line, the strong lady bit the bullet while rejecting Heilong’s (Pierre Ng) unsolicited help, and gave birth to a baby boy by the river.

　　聪慧、机灵，漂亮、伶牙俐齿，在土生华人家庭长大，是个可爱的小娘惹，因父母早丧，自幼就被珍娘收养，跟珍娘读书学习，后随珍娘嫁到张家，面对东恩这顽劣哥哥，总有办法“先发制人”，让东恩乖乖就范。珍娘一视同仁，让她和东恩一起接受中西教育，这在当日仍视“女子无才便是德”的社会是少见的。蕙娘在珍娘死后，助东恩与野心勃勃的二叔张广达抗衡，力保张家事业，二人同甘共苦，共渡危难，感情滋长，虽无血缘关系，却不敢逾越。后在东恩的安排下，答应嫁给胡天鹰，但她的心，始终无法忘记东恩。

　　Zhang Huiniang was raised in a native Chinese family in Nanyang, following her parents’ early deaths. Intelligent and beautiful, the little Nonya was brought up by Huang Zhenniang (Carole Lin) who took great care of her even after marrying into the Zhang family.

　　Zhenniang treated Huiniang and her step-brother Zhang Dong-en (Elvin Ng) fairly, educating them with both Eastern and Western ideals, which was a rare occurrence at that time.

　　Despite Dong-en’s stubborn character, the witty Huiniang always had her way of dealing with him. After Zhenniang passed, Huiniang assisted her step-brother to protect the family business by fending off his crafty uncle Zhang Guangda (Terence Cao).

　　Although the two developed romantic feelings while fighting against Guangda, they buried their emotions and kept a distance from each other. Upon Dong-en’s arrangement, Huiniang married Zhang Tianying (Adi-Allen) against her true wishes.
